I never thought I´d be my mother

I never thought I would become my mother.

This essay began outside Dana’s football training in Malmö, when a coach explained that Dana needs calm and quiet before a tournament.

At first I was moved that the coach had really seen her.

Then I realised: that is me.

And then: that comes from my mother, Hedvig.

It became an essay about inheritance. Not money or houses, but habits, routines, fears, discipline, silence, love, and the strange responsibility of understanding that our children do not only listen to what we say.

They watch how we live.
