Report 8: Greenland Icecap-Crossing The Nansen Route

Hi my name is Eva, Mikaels daughter. My dad is in Greenland for a month and a half to ski across the icecap. When he is gone both me and Hannah will be writing his posts for him so you know how he is progressing.

We are currently stuck in the tent by a 25 m/s snowy wind. It made us stop hauling an hour earlier than [our daily target]. We stopped in a [droning] wind, a complete whiteout, and helped each other put up both tents. It was that bad. It is supposed to slow down mid-day tomorrow. We will see. We have hauled for 24 days, with only two half-day breaks in stormy winds. We all want to get off the ice soon. Yesterday, we saw a few birds, a sign that we are getting close to the West Coast. We are 9-10 days away. I am certainly thinking of the end now.

My girls, Hannah, some great friends and family. Well, I miss them a lot! A lot of life now is routine. Eating, sleeping, and hauling 9 times a day with a 10-minute break every hour. So all in all we are out there moving 10.5 hours a day in all weather. In the last three days, we have done about 75km. So we’re moving forward.

Most of life now is how to dress. And the weather changes in seconds…one day it is -20 C, the next a drizzle, then a whiteout. I am quite tired after 24 days, but there are not that many left now.

It is a simple life, where just being able to put on a warm jacket when I’m cold, is a life highlight. But it is really hard to do a Fall crossing of Greenland with all these different climates in a day. And there is always work to do, mainly keeping snow out of the tent. Moisture is high [and that is a problem].

One day at a time. Hannah’s love messages every day make life easier.

400km complete, more or less, with approximately 200 left to go. Sleds are getting lighter and we are better skiers.
