Fot cruising/Foot cruising

English version:

I have just returned home to the cabin after carrying two heavy shopping bags of food and 12 liters of milk on one of my shoulders. It´s around a mile to walk, but offers great views of the spectacular surroundings. It´s sale prices if one buys bulk this week and since milk, eggs and cheese will be a commodity once the winter months arrive, we are stocking up! Once back home it was again time to carry out that heavy bucket of urine and faeces, so, yes, a hard life, ain´t it?

The time right now is just passed nine in the morning and since 06.00, I have woken, baked bread, done breakfast and left the girls in their respective units of education in Greenlandic studies. So, not until now, I can do any work. Eva will be back at noon, and for every day passing, we lose 15-20 minutes of daylight, so…yes….one can feel a great amount of stress even in the most peaceful of places!

For this reason, it is of vital importance to use every second one has to be outdoors, which is why the girls and me trotted down over the mountains to the cod water, lost another lure, but gained lots of new fresh energy. The girls are just wonderful company! And as an inspiring a young lady is Kaja, who I met this Saturday, back from boarding school to visit her parents. She is studying at a high school in a bigger settlement a few hours boat ride away and she returns home 3-4 times a year. I have spent a lot of time thinking about the young people living here in the settlement and what kinds of thoughts they have on life and their future, but it takes time to establish contact, which meant when I was contacted by Kaja, I was happy! Obviously she is one of these young people on top of life, who knows what they want and have a major interest in the outside world. And, she also belongs to that group of people I have been meeting since we arrived here. Those interested in people from the outside world and who speak a language I understand. Danish or English.

I have noticed young people in the settlement walk back and forth, like cruising by foot in comparison to young people where I come from, where they do the same in a car, to get noticed, kill time or be with their friends. Obviously the alternative here is much healthier, because they walk from the gas station on the little island and to the end of the village, which is a good and hilly distance. Kaja studies languages and her English is excellent and she wants to travel the world. She has been studying in Denmark previously like so many other Greenlanders, she liked it and she didn´t experience any of the negative attitudes that one hears on and off that Danes have been known to show against Greenlanders. (*1)It seems that most opportunities for Greenlanders, when it comes to a higher education, still today is based in Denmark. And if I am to believe local media (*2), the Greenlandic state has a major problem attracting people to become doctors or teachers to their higher education. But Kaja says they offer great opportunities and help for those who wish to study, so obviously the problem is elsewhere. She also said that she will return to her hometown when she retires from her professional life, which she wants and dreams of pursuing, because the quality of life is better and more peaceful here.

I have to say it was really uplifting to meet Kaja, obviously I will help her during her travels and I met her through Facebook and I really understand the great value Facebook has for an isolated community as ours. You can sell and buy whatever is needed through people shooting off their goods on Facebook (*3) and you can see what is important in their lives through their reports and images of fish, hunting, football and kaffemiks.

I am in a rush, I need to bake bread before the girls are back. And a dinner made of a fresh halibut soup with wholegrain rice brought from home.
