Crossing El Darién is one of the defining chapters in my 1986–87 bicycle journey from Chile to Alaska. Between Colombia and Panama the road ends and the map becomes meaningless. What follows is not a route but a region: jungle, rivers, humidity, fear, logistics, and the moment a bicycle stops being transport and becomes weight. This is the story of going in anyway.
