Föhnvinden har anlänt/The föhn wind has arrived

(Swedish version first, followed by the English one)

Den bara anlände oväntat över natten, föhn, och all is i viken bara försvann.

Men mindre hälleflundra.

Man överlever.

English version:

It just arrived silently overnight, the föhn wind, and all ice in the bay just disappeared. The hours before its arrival I had carefully walked over the ice. When it arrived with the warmth, I had my morning coffee outside just dressed in a T-shirt. More than ever I could enjoy the best view on earth.

It has been a great time since we returned. People are great and I have been able to do some really good interviews where people open up. There´s a worry, of course, for the future among most of them I talk to. Some even consider leaving the area for new pastures elsewhere. This, of course, is the reality not only here in Greenland, though more extreme, but in most countrysides north of the Arctic circle. Locals moving into cities in search of more opportunities and a new life. Here in town, the fish factory is extremely important for the future of the town. It employs almost half of all able people to work here. I met Hans the boss the other day, a very empathic person, and he noted that due to the warm weather of the last 30 years, the cod has returned again and there´s plenty off them. A very good sign for the local people. But there´s less halibut. But the future looks positive, but one day at a time is the motto.

Patience is more than a virtue here, it is a must to survive. When you can only get in or out by boat or helicopter, weather rules your life. At times the shelves in the shops are empty. Variety is very basic. But you survive. And that is a lesson i once again have learned. One survives. It could be worse.

Pam and myself, well, we are trying to figure out how to deal with the upcoming year. Eva can´t, for medical reasons, saty much longer, so the girls and me, will return soon and Pam will stay on for her work. I do love this place lots and would like to stay on much longer, but I have also realized during this time, after living the last ten years before in big cities, i have turned into a city person. I miss the anonymity, the variety of cultures and people and the opportunities for intellectual stimulance. But Eva do need to be close to specialists for a few years or so, maybe always, we don´t know yet. On top of that, it is all about education to survive in the future we believe, so that is another reason for returning. And Eva demands more knowledge.

We have been eating whale all week, that finwhale from last year, and it really is a stomach filler. Way too heavy for me really. But really tasty when grilled. We need the protein. I hope the ice will disappear on the lakes soon, want to get my rod out and catch some Arctic char with the girls this weekend. Time to take out the fresh bread from the oven, the girls just eat and eat all the time…..
