Grönland: Avfärd och hemkomst/Greenland: Goodbye and Welcome home

English version:

We´ve been back in Malmö two weeks now, the girls and myself. It has been a time dominated by problems sleeping, too hot (!), starting a new life, home, from scratch after arriving to a completely empty flat, signing into Swedish society again (tax office, schools and health care) and a feeling of loss as regards to Greenland. Luckily the girls and myself, we are pragmatic folks, so longing and the loss of things ain´t too dramatic. We do a day at a time. They got their big wish for their own password protected room and bunkbed. We live well, though expensive, but compared to Greenland, it is cheap!

The last two weeks in Greenland where exhilarating and earthshaking in one. Kalle and Ulrika came over to help with the documentary filming, the girls wanted to go back to Sweden, but at the same time worried about missing mum too much, and I needed to finish and tie things together as regards to the documentary and life in general. Trying to say goodbye to friends and loved ones without too much drama. Not easy. On top of all this, the mosquitoes where getting bad, the Arctic char was still not going for my lures and everything from sorting out the last bills, to fixing the house, packing and taking the last shots, demanding indeed.

It took time returning to Malmö. We first took the big icebreaker to Ilulissat, a journey for local people and visitors which is definitely one of the most spectacular on earth, we stayed a day meeting good friends and then we boarded the short flight to Kangerlussuaq, got stuck there a day and finally ended up midnight in an empty flat in Malmö. That after that tragic journey from the airport and over Öresund, where Swedes show their worst sides (please, visitors, don´t judge Swedes by this journey alone!) and spent the first night on the floor.

What do I immediately feel right now that I miss from Greenland? The neighbors, especially Skades, who was always there to help and talk, my great friends, the incredibly healthy and freshly clean air, the silence, the fishing, the running, walking and the chillaxing mood.

What don´t I miss? The constant worry what would happen if Eva would suddenly turn worse in her dangerous disease, I don´t miss the diet, I am back on my vegetarian diet again, the girls have their Falu Sausage, I don´t miss the weak coffee either! Or the prices. And I certainly don´t miss the stresses of life which dominated much of this year, even though it all felt great when finally leaving.

Right now, whilst writing this early morning, the girls are still sleeping, we are planning to spend most of the day on the beach, I have three things on my mind:

First of all, these 14 months all together in Greenland is definitely the most defining, important and interesting in my life. Though extremely dramatic. Secondly, I realize what an enormous challenge I have ahead doing a good job by making the documentary, write the book and so on about this dramatic time, and thirdly, even though I am completely wiped out mentally and physically by this time, what a fantastic time it has been, especially local people!
